(or, how B-Westerns took over my life)
As a little girl growing up in the late 90's, I was an unlikely candidate to get sucked into this fandom. Especially since I was never a fan of westerns. My parents always had classic movie channels turned on the TV, so I was regularly exposed to the more mainstream western stars such as John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and Jimmy Stewart... and personally, I never understood the hype. No shade to those who do enjoy those movies, but I found that westerns in general just didn't appeal to me.
So what changed? Well, my parents happened to buy us kids a set of Roy Rogers movies on VHS one Christmas, and the rest is history. My lifelong obsession with B-Westerns was born.
Those Roy Rogers movies were watched so frequently during my early childhood years that the VHS tapes completely wore out. Thankfully, that was right around the time DVDs became a thing, so my parents replaced that original faded set with a succession of new B-Westerns, this time on digital discs that couldn't be worn down no matter how many times we watched them (which was a LOT of times). In addition to Roy Rogers, we were now exposed to other B-Western cowboys such as Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, and Rex Allen. The best thing about this new fixation of mine was that there was an endless supply of new material to consume -- countless movies, TV shows, comic books, kid and YA novels, and so much more.
This webpage was built as a place where I can hopefully give a general overview of the world of B-Westerns, as well as the cowboys and horses that populate it. This isn't meant to be a thorough deep dive or even an entirely impartial one (I have my favorites, and my biases will definitely show on these pages lol) but my aim is to help others get a general idea of what this fandom has to offer. If you're looking for a more complete and factual documentation of B-Westerns and the industry that made them, I highly recommend checking out the links on the "further reading" page.
In the meantime, let's hit the trails and see what there is to explore in this world of desert landscapes, wild horses, and perpetual runaway stagecoaches.
