While rewatching it last night, I was once again reminded how tragic it is that Scott saw his alpha eyes for the first time under those circumstances. He was already (incorrectly) blaming himself for Derek's "death" and that moment just solidified his guilt for him.

In the motel bathroom, Scott shuts off the faucet and sighs as the weight of the day finally crashes over him. He glances up at his reflection. He looks almost as exhausted as he feels.

A flicker of something catches his attention as he turns away. Curious, he leans towards the mirror.

His eyes flash, shifting colors into an unnatural glow. He’s slowly gotten used to this over the past year, but this is different. The sight of it stabs straight to his soul and makes his stomach churn. Breathing becomes impossible as he stares at the reflection.

The irises which normally shine bright gold now burn with red. An ugly accusation he can’t deny anymore, with the proof of it staring back at him from the cruel glass.

It must be true then. Derek is dead, and he is the one responsible.

He’s known it — hasn’t been able to stop thinking it all day — and yet it still makes him sick at the realization. Maybe part of him was still in denial. Maybe the reassurances of his friends were actually making some headway. It doesn’t matter now. He knows the truth. His own eyes are evidence of his guilt.
