"Walter just likes to find things."
The Finder is a quirky detective show that aired on Fox at the start of 2012. It was a spin-off of Bones and actually started with a backdoor pilot in that show. Sadly, the series ran for only thirteen episodes before -- like many, many shows that were unlucky enough to air on Fox -- it was cancelled after only half a season... and ended on a cliffhanger.
I was personally introduced to the show several years later when it popped up on Netflix. It has taken up permanent residence in a corner of my brain ever since. The lack of any closure on how this story was supposed to end will haunt me forever.
So what was The Finder actually about? Let's dive in...
Walter Sherman is an Iraq veteran who was gravely injured when his hummer went over an IED. The resulting brain damage was severe enough to result in a discharge back to the US, and to leave Walter a very changed man. Aside from the personality changes, paranoia, and inability to understand social cues, Walter also received a bizarre new gift -- what he refers to as his "Finder power". He can find anything, no matter how strange or well-hidden, or he'll die trying.
With his family determined to have him committed, and in need of a safe place to indulge his "Walter-ness" (as his friends call it), he ends up on the tiny island of Looking Glass Key off the coast of Florida. There, he sets up his own unique sort of private investigating firm to find whatever objects, people, or random things his clients hire him to track down. But he's not alone in this new venture. Walter happened to land himself right into the middle of the best found family he could hope for, and they all (sometimes reluctantly) jump in to help.
➤ Leo Knox: Formerly an attorney, he retired after the loss of his wife and child. Walter helped him in a time of great need, so Leo tends to be very loyal and very protective over Walter. Leo is the owner of a tiny bar known as "The Ends of the Earth" which serves as Walter's base of operations. He also acts as Walter's legal counsel, business manager, and moral conscience.
➤ Willa Monday: A young orphan who is on probation for multiple counts of theft. She is quite a talented pick pocket and con artist. She lives and works at "The Ends of the Earth" as part of her probation. While initially resistant to all of Leo's attempts at reforming her, Willa eventually grows to love their strange little team and uses her criminal skills to help them on their investigations.
➤ Isabel Zambada: An FBI agent who gets repeatedly dragged into the team's cases. She and Walter have a casual friends-with-benefits arrangement at first, before developing genuine feelings for each other. Isabel dreams of having a prestigous career in law, and is often frustrated when the team's antics threaten her standing in the law enforcement community, but she cares about them all more than she'll admit.
What about the mysteries? Well, they say variety is the spice of life. And, boy, does this show have variety! Throughout the tragically short run of the show, Walter and his disfunctional found family go on the hunt for: a bullet fired from a gun decades ago, a dead man's final phone conversation, an unspecified inheritence, an athlete's lucky streak, and more. Through it all, Walter hyperfocuses on his goal of finding whatever bizarre item he's been tasked with seeking, and often ends up unearthing deeper mysteries along the way. Not that he cares about the murders or political schemes he happens to stumble across -- as Isabel and Leo accurately summed it up, "Walter doesn't care about murder mysteries - Walter just likes to find things."
