Flynn is a genius polymath with extensive knowledge in a wide variety of fields. He was born in 1973 as the only child of Margie Carsen and her husband. The father traveled a lot, causing him to be absent from his son's life a lot. He was shot and killed when Flynn was still a young child.
Flynn was highly intelligent from a very young age. At the age of nine, he got into a debate with Stephen Hawking over some of his theories. He also translated Don Quixote at the age of twelve. Not much is known of his school life, though Flynn mentioned having been the stage manager of his high school's production of Macbeth, and he appears to still have a great deal of fondness for the theater. He apparently graduated high school at a very early age, as it was mentioned that he started college around the time he was fifteen years old.
By the age of 31, Flynn had accumulated twenty-two degrees -- 12 Bachelor's, 6 Master's, and 4 doctorates. This includes four degrees in Egyptology, a doctorate in Comparative Religions, a PhD in cryptology, PhD's in 15th and 17th century Spanish Literature, and "degrees in every language you can imagine." He was working on his twenty-third degree (also in Egyptology) when his professor signed off on his degree early to force Flynn into going out and gaining some real life experience.
He was recruited into the Library at 31 years old. He was selected out of a long list of candidates. Originally, Flynn worked with a Guardian, Nicole Noone, but then worked solo after her apparent death a few months later. During his time at the Library, Flynn retrieved many lost artifacts and saved the world countless times. Judson hinted that Flynn was special and had a particular destiny with the Library.
Flynn has survived alone longer than any other Librarian and holds a special connection to the Library. When the Library's spirit was granted human form, it referred to Flynn as its best friend. He apparently moved into the Library sometime between 2007 and 2014 and now considers it his home. He is also best friends with Excalibur, who taught Flynn how to sword fight.
Almost fifteen years after he was first recruited, Flynn chose to tether to the Library, taking on the role formerly filled by Judson. He tethered with his current Guardian, Eve Baird, and the two were granted immortality as a result.
Besides his extensive learning, Flynn also possesses a very high IQ and a photographic memory. He is very skilled in math and can speedily perform intense calculations in his head. He has a special talent for linguistics, being able to speak many different languages (including dead ones) and being able to learn them quickly; he once managed to learn the Language of the Birds in seven hours. In addition to extensive knowledge of geography and botany, Flynn has memorized the surface of the earth, and once stated that he also memorized the known universe.
While initially a shy bookworm who didn't know how to handle himself in dangerous situations, Flynn's ten years of working without a Guardian has resulted in him picking up a lot of survival skills. He is a highly skilled swordsman, a marksman with a gun, can handle himself in a fist fight, and is able to free himself from any ropes or handcuffs.
Flynn's time as Librarian has granted him the opportunity to learn a great deal about magic and how to wield it. While he doesn't use magic often (likely a result of the lesson he learned from King Solomon's book), he does have quite an arsenal of spells and tricks at his disposal. Among these are his ability to access the Annex's back door from the outside, the ability to use any door as a portal instead of only the backdoor, a diffusion spell he uses when introducing himself to strangers, and a spell he used to track the ley lines in England. Flynn has stated that magic can be useful, but can also be dangerous when used recklessly, which might explain why he doesn't utilize it for bigger situations.
As an immortal, Flynn can no longer die from old age. He also no longer needs to eat or sleep and will never get sick.
Flynn has poor people skills and generally prefers to work alone. Even before working for the Library, he wasn't particularly social and stuck to his academic studies. While working as Librarian, he has forged several close friendships and had the opportunity to team up with others across his various adventures. Most of his romantic and familial relationships have ended in tragedy, leaving Flynn more closed off to others and afraid of letting people get too close.
FRIENDSHIPS/FAMILY:
➣ Judson - Judson has acted as a mentor and father figure to Flynn over the years. He taught him how to be a true Librarian, and helped guide him through many difficult events in his life. Even after his death, he stayed around the Library as an incorporeal spirit until he was sure Flynn was ready for him to leave.
➣ Charlene - While initially resistant to Flynn's presence at the Library, Charlene quickly warmed up to him and the two developed a close bond. She helped him through his heartbreak over losing Katie, as well as his doubts about being the Librarian. After his adventure in New Orleans, Flynn gifted Charlene a pendant and she always wore it afterwards, stating that she never takes it off. After the loss of his mother and Judson, Charlene was the only family Flynn had left.
➣ Excalibur - The sentient sword of King Arthur. While it took a little while to warm up to each other, they are now best friends. Excalibur taught Flynn how to fight with a sword. They saved the world together against Prospero during which Flynn unknowingly fulfilled an old prophecy regarding Exalibur's return.
➣ Margie Carsen - Flynn's mother. While she could be a bit smothering at times, the two had a close relationship and cared deeply for each other.
The LITs:
➣ Jacob Stone - The two have a great deal in common in their mutual love for art, history, and languages. Stone expressed his admiration for Flynn as a Librarian and leader several times, and Flynn seemed to get along with him easier than the other LITs initially.
➣ Cassandra Cillian - Both having photographic memories and a talent for math, they are often the first two to put together the pieces of the current puzzle. After Cassandra's betrayal of the team and the Library, Flynn was the first to forgive her and welcome her back onto the team.
➣ Ezekial Jones - The two have a more adversarial relationship than Flynn with the other LITs, but it lessens over time to a more friendly rivalry.
ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS:
➣ Nicole Noone - Flynn's first Guardian, as well as his first steady girlfriend and first love. She helped him recover the Spear of Destiny when he was first recruited into the Library. They worked well together for three months before an incident with a time machine resulted in her apparent death. It was later revealed that Nicole had actually been sent back in time and became immortal. By the time she returned, Flynn had fallen in love with Eve and ultimately chose her over Nicole. After this, Flynn and Nicole were briefly enemies -- as Nicole's trauma had hardened her towards the Library and Flynn -- but they eventually managed to part as friends.
➣ Emily Davenport - A genius archeologist who was working a dig site in Casablanca when Flynn went there in search of Solomon's Mine. The two were initially competitive and antagonistic towards each other, but eventually discovered that they worked well together. They shared a brief romantic dalliance, but ultimately parted ways when their adventure was done.
➣ Katie - Flynn's girlfriend during his third year as Librarian. They broke up after his job repeatedly got in the way of their relationship.
➣ Simone Renoir - A vampire who called Flynn down to New Orleans to help her protect a dangerous artifact. The two fell in love during their adventure, but Simone chose to free herself from the vampire curse after their work was done, dying in Flynn's arms as they shared a goodbye kiss.
➣ Eve Baird - Flynn's second Guardian. At first, he was resistant to the idea of having another Guardian, but the two quickly discovered how well they worked together. Breaking usual customs, they chose to work separately after their initial adventure, but the two maintained an on-and-off long distance relationship during that time. After retrieving the Eye of Ra, Flynn chose to stay at the Library and he and Eve began a more serious romantic relationship. They have now tethered to the Library together, becoming immortal and making their union permanent.
