Lois gazed out at the lighted signs and streetlamps that outlined Metropolis at night. A few scattered figures and cars could be spotted passing on the streets below, but the curfew wasn't officially lifted yet, so there wasn't much activity to be seen.

Wrapped in an old quilt and perched on the wall of her balcony, bare feet dangling over the five story drop, every breeze made it easy to imagine she was flying. It was a game she'd played often over the past months, trying to catch a memory that had been stolen too soon. She didn't need to fake that memory now. Not when the real thing was sitting beside her, holding her tight in his arms.

She used to be more cautious around these kind of heights, but it was hard to be afraid of falling when she knew there was someone who would always catch her. It was a comfortable feeling. Maybe she'd even started taking it a little for granted. At least, she had before... well, before her entire world had shattered at her feet.

A shiver ran through her and Lois pulled the blanket tighter, even knowing it had nothing to do with the weather.

"You cold?" Clark asked, wrapping his arms more firmly around her.

Lois shook her head but snuggled closer against his chest anyway. He didn't call her out on it. If anything, his own grip was rivaling hers, holding on as if they'd both fade away without each other's touch. After the past six months, Lois wouldn't doubt it.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked quietly.

"Nothing," she murmured. "Everything." She turned her head, taking in every shadow and glimmer of light reflecting off his features. "I feel like I should be afraid. We just found out how fragile our future is. Is it wrong that I'm not?" She shrugged, turning back to the cityscape ahead. "I'm tired of being afraid."

"Then don't be," Clark said. "Even after all of that, we're here. We're still here. We're going to be fine."

"Midwest optimism?" she joked.

"No. Faith in us."
