"Did you have to pull the pin?" Napoleon asked, after the THRUSH operative had been dragged away.

Illya, still holding the armed grenade far too casually, merely shrugged. "We wanted it to be believable, or he would have called our bluff."

"In this case, I'd say there's such a thing as too realistic a charade. Those things are called 'safety' pins for a reason."

Illya reinserted the pin with a sigh. "Next time we need to stop a THRUSH agent from irradiating a city, I'll be sure to follow proper safety protocols."

Napoleon purposefully ignored the sarcasm. "That'd be appreciated."

Title: Ashes
Characters: Napoleon Solo

Warnings: Implied/referenced deaths

Some days, it really was impossible to reconcile the consequences of their actions with the ideals that precipitated them.

As Napoleon surveyed the burnt wreckage that had once been a home, his heart ached for the displaced residents that would never be coming home — and for the ones that never left.

It wasn't necessarily their fault that THRUSH's latest retaliation had taken out a few civilian buildings in addition to the U.N.C.L.E. outpost nearby. Just as it wasn't their fault that there hadn't been enough time after cracking the encoded message to prevent the attack. And it was beyond impressive that they'd manged to save as many people as they had before the buildings were completely engulfed.

So, all in all, things had certainly turned out better than could be expected, given the circumstances. No doubt, the higher ups at U.N.C.L.E. headquarters would be more than pleased with the lives they'd saved today. Maybe he should be, too. But "good enough" meant nothing with the ashes of their defeat still clinging to his shoes and swirling forlornly through the air.

As he turned away from the charred remains, Napoleon promised himself that next time they wouldn't settle for "good enough".

Napoleon gripped the payphone tighter, leaning heavily on the wall of the booth. "Can you do it?" he asked again, trying to hide the pain and desperation from his voice.

"I still don't understand," his partner said. "You know I can get into serious trouble removing that item from the evidence lockup without Mr Waverly's permission, yet you won't even explain why you need it? Or why we need to meet in such an unusual place, without backup?"

"Illya, please. Do you trust me?"

There was only a momentary hesitation on the other end. "I'll be there in twenty minutes."

"Well, I think that covers all the formalities," Waverly said, sitting back in his chair. "Barring any unforeseen issues between now and then, you'll be officially instated as an UNCLE agent before the end of the week. Any questions, Mr. Kuryakin?"

Illya eyed the older man a moment, gaze sweeping the rest of the figures at the table as well. He received an encouraging nod from his own superior — or, former superior now — letting him know to speak freely. Returning his attention to his new boss, he took a deep breath. "Only one question, sir. Why did you choose me?"
