“Okay, I called Perry,” Lois said, groaning as she lowered herself onto the sand beside him. “We got the exclusive on the story. Plus headline on this evening’s paper if we get the story in before it goes to print.”

Clark nodded, kicking at the damp sand with his sneaker. He tried to tune out the sounds of the police radios and confusion up the hill behind them, choosing to focus instead on the more calming whisper of the waves below. Super-hearing had to be his least favorite power.

High tide had the beach completely submerged, but their little patch of sand was just high enough to be out of the water. The sun hovered above the line of the horizon, still soft and large as it painted the sky all shades of pink and orange.

Despite the autumn chill in the air, Clark pushed up his sleeves, drinking in the warmth of the morning rays on his skin.

His parents used to tease that he was like a cat, the way he was constantly napping in the sun when he was tired, or after a long day on the farm. Of course, that was before they’d known that his body was essentially a solar battery. Like so much else in his life, that particular quirk of his biology had finally made sense to Clark after meeting Jor-El.

“Well,” Lois sighed, brushing a few layers of soot off her boots, “that whole thing certainly could have gone better.”

Clark glanced over at her. The sun was glinting red off her dark hair as she worked at shaking sand loose from the tangled strands. He swallowed and shook his head. “I don’t know,” he said. “I think it worked out pretty well.”

Lois paused, turning to look more fully at him. Her head tilted slightly left, the way it always did when she was running calculations in her head. “Oh, really?”

“We got the story,” he hastily added. “And helped the police catch a ring of drug dealers. Not a bad night’s work.” He didn’t bother adding the fact that they’d both almost been killed in the process. Or how close he’d come to revealing his secret when he thought that gang leader was going to shoot Lois. “We make a good team.”

She eyed him for a few moments. The expression on her face always made Clark feel like she was looking directly into his mind and reading his every thought.

“Yeah,” she said softly. One hand drifted over to rest on top of his. “We really do.”

Clark wasn’t a particularly impulsive person. He preferred to consider his options and make sure of his choices before committing to them. But this was one time when he didn’t need to give his decision a second thought.

Afterwards, he had no idea who had actually moved first. Maybe they both had. Either way, one moment they were sitting side by side, staring at each other from across that ever-present professional barrier. The next moment, they were smashing that wall to oblivion.

Kissing Lois Lane was somehow exactly as Clark had imagined it would be, but also nothing like it at all.

She was soft and warm in an entirely human way. She tasted like newsstand coffee and cherry lip balm. And she filled Clark with a warmth and energy that rivaled the yellowest of suns.

She tasted like the sunrise and felt like flying.

When they pulled apart, Lois’s eyes were closed and a smile lit up her face in a way that Clark had never seen on her before — although he was sure he had one to match on his own face.

Her eyes fluttered open and the smile turned into her more customary teasing smirk. “Not bad, Smallville.”

Clark laughed. He didn’t even have a comeback for her this time. Kissing Lois was like nothing he’d ever experienced before, but he was sure he could get used to the feeling. He certainly wouldn’t be opposed to trying. All he knew was that he would really like to kiss her again.

“So, I think we’ve done enough work for one morning.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Is Lois Lane actually suggesting taking a day off work?” he asked mockingly.

“I never said the whole day,” she defended. “We still have a story to write, remember? But I badly need a shower and change of clothes first.” She glanced at him, smile softening again. “And I wouldn’t say no to breakfast?”

“Tell you what,” he said. “I’ll pick up breakfast for us and drop you off at your apartment to get cleaned up, if you do something for me in return. In fact, I’ll even copyedit the article.”

Her eyes narrowed suspiciously. “And what are you asking for in exchange?”

“Dinner tonight.”

While his tone was light, his heart definitely missed a few beats while he waited for her to answer. Of course, being Lois, she had to prolong the torture by pretending to consider the proposal.

“I think I can manage that,” she said at last. She leaned in a little closer. “Actually, that sounds really nice.”

He leaned down, catching her lips in one more, quick kiss.

Yes, he decided. He could definitely get used to this.
